Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport, or Balikpapan Airport(IATA: BPN), serves the city of Balikpapan and adjacent areas of East Kalimantan. It is conveniently located in Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Seppingan airport began its new operational phase on August 6, 1997, with a new building and runway structure, replacing the old building structure on the same site. PT operates the airport. Angkasa Pura I has an area of 300 hectares or 740 acres.

This is the third busiest airport in Kalimantan, after that Banjarmasin and Pontianak. The airport was also recognized as second placer for the best in service in the world for airports, with a yearly handling capacity of about 5 million to 15 million passengers in 2018 by Airports Council International.

History of Balikpapan Airport

Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport was built during the Dutch colonial period before Indonesian independence. It was primarily used for a Dutch Oil Company's activities in Balikpapan.

The airport was then turned into public and commercial space after being handed over to Direktorat Jenderal Perhubungan Udara of the Republic of Indonesia in 1960.

The airport was finally managed by Perum Angkasa Pura I due to Government Regulation (PP) No.1 on January 9, 1987.

Balikpapan Airport was renovated twice from 1991 to 1997. The first phase was started in 1991 and ended in 1994 to renovate the taxiway, passenger, and cargo terminals and lengthen the runway.

In 1995, the Indonesian government announced Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Airport as the fifth Indonesian hajj embarkation facility for the Kalimantan region. The second renovation phase took place in 1996 to renovate the hangars, fuel depots, and administration buildings. The second phase was finished, and the airport started its new operational era with new structures and facilities in 1997.

In July 2011, a new passenger terminal construction was initiated.

In 2012, Cargo terminal move to a new building started. Also, the Administration Office, Finance, and Commercial moved to new offices in the two-story building built as a support facility for the Development Project of Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport.

In March 2014, the new terminal building was tested. In September of the same year, the building was officially opened by the 6th president of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Balikpapan is a seaport town located East of Kalimantan, Indonesia. The city is the economic hub of the Kalimantan region, with an estimated 2016 GDP of Rp 73.18 trillion.

In 1899, the Dutch East Indies colonial authority granted a township status to Balikpapan.

In 1907, Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschapij (BPM) made the city its headquarters and imported skilled laborers, engineers, and managers from overseas. Subsequently, numerous multinational companies arrived in Balikpapan to invest in its oil industry.

This resulted in Balikpapan's successful economic boom and attracted many migrants and expatriates.

During World War II, the Empire of Japan settled the city in 1942 as part of Indonesia's occupation. The Allies bombed it in the first Balikpapan Battle in 1942 and the second battle in 1945.

The wars impacted critical infrastructure, including the oil refinery stations and seaports wholly burned to the ground. Upon Indonesia's independence, BPM extended its activities in Balikpapan until 1965, when Pertamina, the Indonesian state-owned oil company, took control of BPM and its oil exploration activities.
